demeter918: blue doraemon cat (Death Note - the_pixelized - dead boys d)
[personal profile] demeter918
The list has been considerably refurbished and updated, though sadly, aside from licensing news and others, there's been precious few volumes of yaoi manga actually released. Financial difficulties abound.

Note: several publishing dates have been changed. Many titles have been pushed back or released later than anticipated. The dates of the unreleased manga is still very much up in the air, so don't kill me if it's distributed later than you thought it would be. Please?

One worthy manga to mention: Antique Bakery, by Yumi Yoshinaga. She's one of my favourite mangaka, though little known outside of the one above work and her yaoi manga volumes. Her artwork's detailed, her plots incredible, and Antique Bakery was one of those rare series that had slash elements but didn't let it take over the plot. The story is very much wrapped up around the owner of the bakery and the concept of the manga is wonderful. It takes events that happened in the past and she dances with how one action can affect characters for years to come. While I had known it was popular in Japan, no way had I thought it would get licensed over here. But I guess winning the Kodansha Manga Award (shoujo series) will get any manga series translated and very few better than this.

This series is not exactly for the hardcore fans of shoujo or those who are expecting lots and lots of slashiness. There's very little conventional romance and it's fairly painful and angsty. I really, really, really recommend this series. Seriously. For all those on my flist who read manga, if you enjoy foreshadowing, in-depth character development, an engaging plot, then Antique Bakery is an absolute must. At only four volumes, I consider it doable. (oh, all right, I'll bite. It does include a couple scenes for the yaoi fan).

Her previous work has included Gerard and Jacques. One of her notable specialties is historical manga, either in Japan's feudal past or in Europe's (often France or England) nobility-past.

This is an update of this list.

Warnings: This list contains manga that is explicit in slash, yaoi, bl, whatever one wants to call it. There's lots of boyonboy action, so if that's not your cup of tea, refrain from clicking on my pretty lj-cut. Flaming, ranting, and promises of hell will be laughed at.

News

Tokyopop confirms that they will distribute (but not publish, adapt, translate, license, or basically have anything to do with it until the dough starts rolling in) Blu Label, a line that will be exclusively yaoi manga. Acquisitions include Earthian, Love Mode, and Shinobu Kokoro: Hidden Heart. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aka_anonymous for the tip.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jairigami! Gravitation is ending at V.12 and will be released 12 July 2005! *boggles* I always thought it went up to V.18 or something... but then again, there was that wide gap of six years where I didn't pay much attention... -_-;;

Once again, if there are any mistakes or anything I might have missed, give me a heads up.

Did you know there is a live action TV show of Antique Bakery? The BL is only insinuated, but the show was cute. I'm expecting the manga to be excellent.

I've been trying to figure out how to get the DVD's of that show for the past six months. *weeps* I used to be able to get it Taiwan with all the lovely subtitles, but since I don't travel there nearly often enough. *weeps some more*

There's so many wonderful drama and live-action series that I can't watch...

And then when I get to Japan, I'll be able to watch... but have no clue with what's going on. There's some irony there.

I'm pretty sure that Gravitation is due to end next month (wah!) with the release of volume 12. And, you might amend that Until the Full Moon is available at Borders and Waldenbooks, being the same company and all. Or maybe that's what you meant. Or maybe I'm being picky because I work for Walden's. ;) But yeah, we have it too.

I think I knew it was at Walden's, but since there isn't a local Walden's in my area (Borders and B&N abound), I kind of forgot to put it up. I'll edit that straightaway. (really need to keep bookstores straight... come to think about it, I think I have to edit the title anyways)

Gravitation is ending? Damn, I always thought it went up to eighteen or something... I stopped collecting the manga around V.8, way back before it went on that hiatus, and I think I had assumed it just kept going. 0_0

OMG. This means that there's going to be a proposal!

According to the end of 11 it is, anyway. So maybe not really, you never know. Murakami's a little...off. ;)

But squee, proposal. :) Marriage? Shuichi in a tux...? Mmmm.

YAH! I just checked out Tokyopop's website! It is the end!

*zooms off*

And it ends before I leave. *g* Excellent.

Hey, do you think they're going to print the original editions or the new editions that have special new covers from Yun Kouga? I don't even know how many volumes the original edition had, but the newest ones compiled everything into three thick volumes with special insert and cover art.

I might check Antique Bakery out. I can't stand most mangas, whether shoujo or yaoi, where the romantic plot is the basic plot. I like it to be a subplot, like Fruits Basket. ^_^

Antique Bakery is definitely one of those must-haves. XD It's so not about the romance. It's all about the plot and characters and I adore it pieces.
