One of the most famous stories involved the boy who went down to the sea kingdom for decades and came back to see everyone dead. he opened the box that they'd told him to open and in a flash, he went from a youthful boy to an old man. Maybe the box in Akito's room is something similar. A treasure that once opened, could mean... freedom?
