Bad news first: unless I get that disk back, my Fruits Basket fic starring Akito is really and truly gone.
Good news: Using our school's FTP, I discovered that I had saved a version of my Witch Hunter Robin fic a few days before I lost the disk, so nearly all of it is there. it's missing a few chunks, but far less daunting than than the total loss of Akito. *stares at her FB manga*
I've recovered my Bleach fanfic, the FFVII Yuffie and Vincent piece I was working, and part of the Percy post-OoTP fic. But none of the drabbles or even a teeny bit of the SS/SB fic that actually was progressing. Slowly, but it was progressing, so the loss is felt more acutely than the five other Fruits Basket fics. Why? I can reasonably recreate them, since they were all relatively short and I think I can probably make it better by having to rewrite it, but SS/SB is torturous; I'm already bad at writing them. Losing weeks and weeks of plodding says nothing but HELL!
I'm going to hold out on rewriting until I'm absolutely sure the disk is gone. It might be that someone shoved it into the corner of one these places and the janitor or lab techs may find it lurking around. I'm also hoping, on the off-chance, that someone did find it, and just hasn't gotten around to returning it yet. It's possible.
And before I forget,
I knew I had forgotten bits and pieces and it was risky to do translation just from memory; so I went home and checked; here's what basically is said during key points, things that I've forgotten:
Okay, I don't have volume ten, so this sucks (the one volume I'm missing right now. -_-) And apparently, Akito tells Yuki the 'truth' about something, that makes him rather... well, the word wouldn't be happy or pleased, but clear? It cleared his mind and head. *shrugs* I'm looking for number 10, so I'll back to you on that.
So anyways, this 'truth' apparently has strengthened Yuki on the terms of his uncertainty about the relationship between Kyo and Tohru. On one hand, Yuki has become bizarrely kinder and more suave toward Tohru; on the other, he's very cold and cruel with Kyo. 0_0 I'm a little confused too.
Akito thinks of Kyo as a monster, but he takes special joy in hating and being vindictive toward him. He calls him 'monster, monster, monster' over and over, and says that monsters don't deserve happiness, that he doesn't understand his place. Later in the volume, he demands to Shigure and Hatori to bring Kyo to Akito's place. And they do. And Kyo comes. And apparently, Kyo had made an agreement with Akito; if he can beat Yuki, then Akito will let Kyo stay [outsidde]. All the people cursed by the cat have to be, at one point or another, confined for the rest of their lives. For Kyo, it seems that it'll happen once he graduates high school. Akito laughs at him, seeing how he hasn't beaten Yuki, and saying that the cat will never win the mouse. Akito calls it destiny and fate and the [fate of blood]. Blood is very important to this; blood is what binds the rest of the Jyuunishi to Akito.
Akito goes on, and Kyo's memories of his father blaming him for his mother's death (suicide) and Akito tells Kyo that it is his fault, and that he's truly a monster. He wonders how Kyo could have forgotten that, and then remembers (with an evil little smirk) that Honda Tohru hadn't been frightened by Kyo's true form. Akito then theorizes why. Because she's an angel? A Saint? Or perhaps... a monster too? A too-perfect monster. Kyo is slightly desperate and tells Akito that it's not true, that he couldn't know how frightened she was about his true form, that Akito covers his ears and tells him he's too noisy, but Kyo barrels on into the ephipany that he loves Tohru.
Akito laughs mockingly and says it's fitting that monster would fall in love with monster. Kyo immediately denies it, because all the people that the male members of the Jyuunishi fall in love with are hurt very badly, and Kyo wants to keep Tohru from being further pulled in. Akito pauses and then accepts that, and then as Kyo sinks to the floor, Akito tells him that he likes him, that he'll visit him often when he's confined away, and that it was time soon to leave the outside world.
Skip past some happier parts where nearly everyone angsts a bit ^_^. Apparently, while they were at the beach house, all the Jyuunishi were taking turns to stay by Akito's side, whenever he summoned them. This was their way of protecting Tohru, since keeping Akito somewhat occupied and happy could keep the bad impressions of Tohru at a minimum.
Next: Shigure and Akito's part! I described this last time, so I won't go further into it. Shigure and Akito have the first 'disagreement' ever (though it wasn't really one) and a few parts that I didn't mention was that the home clan had called and Akito is furious about 'something' that was said. Then Shigure says a name. Akito stops and pauses and without turning, asks what he means by that. Shigure just smiles and says it was a guess. Akito is silent and then ignores him and tells Kureno to follow him out. Shigure has this emotionles, dark look on his face. The same with Akito in the following room, except he's covering his eyes. And Akito is apparently more than ready to blame it all on Tohru.
As Momji stops him from seeing Tohru, Akito goes ballistic and accuses him of "looking down on Akito, that he's just using his higher place to win over Akito." That's not a very good translation, so I'll have to work on it.
Tohru stops him by jumping in front of Momji, but Akito just grabs her face and tells her to get back to her rightful place, bitch. XD He then tells her that she can't save the Sohma family, that she can't save Yuki or Kyo. He tells her that Kyo will be locked away forever after graduation, and that Yuki and the rest of the Sohma family would eventually return to his side. They would live together in the same place, they would live at the same time, and they wouldn't need to take or be taken. And it would never change. Then (because this is a pretty shoujo manga), he looks up at they sky with this blank but almost wistful and gentle look on his face and eyes, he says that the happy future would never end and it would never change. But she would not be a part of it.
Tohru is stunned but she questions whether that really is happiness. He smiles and says she can't understand the Sohma family.
Tohru: Who... Who are you?
(Akito-sama isn't the rooster.)
Tohru: You...
(Akito-sama isn't like the others. He has a different existence.)
Tohru: [What] are you to the Twelve Zodiac animals?
(Flashback to bed with Tohru's mom: A long, long time ago, Kami told the animals...)
(Kami)
Akito: To the... twelve Zodiac Animals, my existence is nearly the same as the existence of Kami. I control the twelve souls of the Zodiac, the souls leader... is me.
Kureno: Akito-sama...! I found you... I wondered where you went off to... you'll catch a cold...
Akito: I apologize, Kureno; because I very much wanted to come say hello. I was already preparing to go back. Oh, oh. Yes. Let me make an introduction. He is Sohma Kureno... the Rooster!
Tohru: What...?
Kureno: How do you... do.
(Rooster... this is the Rooster?)
Akito: Tohru... The twelve jyuunishi will always come back to my side. Because... We cannot be apart. So... please don't think of trying to ruin our [happiness] again. Don't stick your head out, stay meek. Or... there will be a divine punishment...
(Akito and Kureno leaves. Tohru sinks to the ground.)
(Akito-sama is... Kami?)
(The one standing on the very top of the Jyuunishi? So... so that's why everyone... can't stand up against him?)
(Then what does the curse...?)
(The curse... has a unknown root for a chain... It all points to the curse, creating a cage... for everyone.)
(Like... Kami?)
There's a short section following it when most of them go to the seaside to put on fireworks, and there's some melting of the ice between certain relationships (like Kyo and Yuki), though it's not really said why. It ends with Tohru determined to break the spell... and onto volume 12, which only has a small part concerning Akito's role.
Tohru goes to see Kazuma-sensei soon after, and a few pleasantries, it's revealed that the people who are cursed with the cat, are not buried in the Sohma family plot. But Kazuma doesn't see this as all that bad, since it means that they're finally free.
Tohru hesitates and then goes into her reason for visiting:
Tohru: Sensei... Does sensei know.... do you (honorific you of course) know....?
Tohru: Break... to break the curse... the way?
T: I heard Akito say... that Kyo... that Kyo would one day be locked away.
T: Yuki.... All of them would return to the Sohma Home. The Jyuunishi have to live like that. They can't be separated!
T: Akito... Akito said... that he is the Jyuunishi's... Kami - !
(The picture during this conversation moves to Akito in the Sohma Family compound and he's leaning against the rail at the window and seated at the window seat. There's a killed bird at the corner, and he then closes his eyes, and it's calm, almost as if reverent and happy. In the background it says: Don't stick your nose into our business. Don't dare try to ruin... our [happiness]
T: If the future Akito said... is true, if that's the sort of future the curse will cause... then I... I... want to break the curse.
Kazuma questions her about why she's asking him with her head bowed, and thinks it's because everyone else has protected her too much.
Kazuma: I'll truthfully tell you. To the curse, to how to break the curse, I am not too clear. Only... Kyo would be locked away... the rest of the Jyuunishi would have to live in the Sohma Family... this future is very possible.
Kazuma: Of course... I don't want them to fall in easily like that. The sad thing is... the Jyuunishi do not have the powerful will to defy Akito.
Tohru: Powerful... will?
K: Because... they have very out of the ordinary feelings for Akito.
(they go through the motions of pouring tea and small talk for a small moment)
K: ... Tohru... I... I have never been afrait of Akito. He is like a child! He only knows to yell out his feelings like a fire.
K: He is a fragile (frail?) and uneasy... child...
K. But to the Jyuunishi, Akito is very special. His existence is like Kami, he lets everyone feel respect and fear. The strong and the weak! To an outsider, it is just a normal word of saying no; to the Jyuunishi, their heart will hurt to the point that it seems like their body is being ripped apart.
(A charcoal-like drawing of Akito behind the words: he looks almost like he's dying or dead. Dark and emotionless, almost despairing. One of my fave. ^_^)
K: The relationship between Akito and the Jyuunishi, people on the outside and on the sidelines will almost never undersatnd. Outsiders cannot enter their [world]. Their bodies flow with generation upon generation of blood! The ties of the blood!
T: ... "Ties" is... the curse?
K: But... I have no evidence.
T: ... "Ties", this thing... should be... very values. (a flashback of her mother)
(And I wanted to free that tie... if I suffered some punishment, perhaps it is... natural. Maybe... it cannot be broken.)
(But I cannot give up. I have to try.)
Here it ends on this subject pretty much. The rest of volume 12 is mostly to do with Kagura and Kyo, Rin and Haru: XD and volume 13 has a thing about Momji and his half-sister, plus Tohru's sneaking into the Sohma Family compound and meeting someone who sounds like Akito, but isn't. Very mysterious. Also, Kureno and Uo-chan are in lurve (from volume nine? or eight) and for some reason Kureno can't accept it. For different reasons then the others though. Akito is VERY posessive of Kureno.
I hope... um... that helped. ^_^
